🌿 Nature’s Whisper: My Eucalyptus-Inspired Necklace…. Still searching for a name, actually!

There’s something quietly powerful about the Australian bush — the way eucalyptus trees sway in the breeze, their leaves whispering stories of resilience, renewal, and raw beauty. That spirit is what I tried to capture in my latest creation: a necklace inspired by eucalyptus flowers and gum trees.

🍃 The Inspiration, you ask?

Eucalyptus blossoms are unlike any other. Their delicate filaments burst in vibrant reds, soft peaches, and creamy apricots, framed by muted green leaves and slender branches. I’ve always been drawn to their understated elegance — the way they bloom without fanfare, yet leave a lasting impression.

This necklace is my homage to that quiet strength and natural grace.

🎨 The Palette, very classic

The colour story is deeply rooted in the landscape:

  • Green: for the leaves — earthy, muted, and grounding.

  • Red: echoing the fiery burst of eucalyptus flowers.

  • Peach/Apricot: a soft contrast, like the early morning light filtering through the canopy.

  • Branch elements: woven into the design to mimic the organic lines of gum tree limbs, adding texture and movement.

Each shade was chosen not just for beauty, but for meaning — a wearable reflection of nature’s palette.

🧵 The Elegant Origins of Romanian Point Lace: A Tale of Thread and Tradition

Romanian Point Lace—also known as Hungarian Point Lace or macramé crochet is a captivating textile art that blends the precision of needlework with the fluidity of crochet. Though it may seem like a relic from centuries past, this lace technique is a relatively modern innovation, emerging in the early 20th century in the culturally rich region of Transylvania, Romania. I have always known it as Macrameu. This is one of the reasons why it was not known in the Western World. I still call it Macrameu or Laseta in Romania.

🌍 A Lace Born of Crossroads

Transylvania, long a crossroads of cultures, provided fertile ground for the birth of Romanian Point Lace. The technique was reportedly taught by Romanian nuns who traveled to Egypt and shared their craft with European-descended families. This cross-cultural exchange helped the lace gain traction beyond Romania’s borders, eventually earning the name “Hungarian Point Lace” in England due to Transylvania’s historical ties to Hungary. There is a specific difference between Hungarian Point Lace and Romanian Point Lace. The Hungarian one is specific with red flowers, as seen in the images below, and the Romanian one is simply nude.

🧶 What Makes It Unique?

Romanian Point Lace uses a hand-crocheted cord as its foundation. This cord features loops along its sides, allowing for intricate needle weaving and decorative infillings. The technique combines crochet, needle lace, and weaving.

Each piece begins with a basted cord outlining a design, which is then filled with needle-woven stitches. The result is a lace that’s not only visually stunning but also structurally firm and reversible—a testament to the craftsmanship involved.

📚 The Women Who Wove It Into History

Two Romanian-born artists, Sylvia Murariu and Ioana Bodrojan, played pivotal roles in popularizing Romanian Point Lace in the United States. Murariu’s books, first published in 1966, documented the technique and introduced innovative designs, while Bodrojan shared her insights through interviews and workshops. Their work ensured that this lace style didn’t fade into obscurity but instead found new life among modern crafters. I am not very familiar with Ioana’s work, but very familiar with Sylvia’s work. Sadly, she is no longer with us, but she left a great legacy. I love the work of ELISABETA GRIGORESCU and her books on Romanian Lace.

✨ A Living Tradition

Today, Romanian Point Lace continues to evolve. New infilling stitches and braid techniques are constantly being developed, keeping the tradition fresh while honoring its roots. It’s a lace that invites creativity, patience, and a deep appreciation for handmade beauty. I try to keep the tradition alive with my Romanian Point Lace Jewelry. I introduce colour, make them available as accessories, and include 3D elements in embroidery and, sometimes, Aboriginal art designs.

Whether you’re a seasoned needleworker or a curious beginner, Romanian Point Lace offers a rich tapestry of history and technique waiting to be explored. It’s not just lace—it’s legacy, looped and woven into every stitch.
